    What's this noise?

    Hi, all -

I've been noticing in a lot of my scans I have some speckly noise showing up - like in this one:

Enough, Dad... by Scott --, on Flickr

I've cleaned the platen, and the negatives are clean, so I'm not sure where it's coming from. I'm scanning with an Epson 4990 - is this possibly the result of off-gassed fogging on the underside of the platen? Power surges? Anyone?

    Thanks,
    Scott

Gem, I do very little sharpening in general, and I'm not even sure if I sharpened this one at all.

If you're using SilverFast, be sure you're not scanning in "draft mode." The checkbox is hidden in the "options" settings.
