I am working on a curve for an imagesetter negative for contact printing. My scans are 8 bit. The curve is significant. Is there any value in converting to 16 bit, apply the curve and return to 8 bit mode? I would think in theory it should help, though not as good as a 16 bit scan.
Moderator: is this really a large format issue? There are more appropriate forums for these digital technical discussions.
Thanks to Ken Lee for including that link. It's extremely interesting, and gives me another reason to eventually upgrade to CS. I also didn't realize that some of Ansels most famous images are available through the National Archive.
You are right. - Strictly speaking, this is a digital matter - but then again, we have a categeory on this wonderful forum called "Digital".
As a large format photographer, I scan my large format negatives, and admire the judgment of other large format photographers who use the same technique. We encounter problems particular to the scanning of large negatives and slides - "the largeness of it all".
For those of us that want to place a representation of our work on the web, scanning becomes a necessary step along the way, even if the genuine prints are done with traditional processes, and look much better.
In that vein, I hope that these excellent answers to my question will be helpful to others as well.
