Christopher Thomas - Venice In Solitude

Just caught a brief look at this book which left me wondering why we all don't shoot 4x5 polaroids (other than for lack of available film). The tonality is elegant and the chosen perspective, time of day/lighting, and angle of view represent high craft. One can learn much from these images including "proper" use of movements.

The Photographer seems highly mobile with his lightweight equipment. More good lessons here.

    Thanks for the heads-up!

I found a link here to a BBC article. The link to the book at Amazon is here.

The BBC article makes reference to type 55. The images are a bit Kenna-esque, which I, interestingly enough, suspected. Perhaps it was the title...

The loss of Polaroid had not a small part in my leaving 4x5. Type 52 was my favorite - wonderful stuff.

Another fine photographer who used Polaroid (Type 55) is Elaine Ling

Thank you for heads-up! But I am afraid this would be more harmful to my bank account than I expected - only yesterday I was thinking about a solitary winter-ish trip to Venice and now this...

There is a B&N nearby where I can find View Camera magazine and many quality photography books not generally found elsewhere. It was inspiring to open the first book on the shelf this week and find these excellent images. Interestingly, Thomas chose to shoot when streets and canals were deserted, presumably at night for many. This is why I love LF stil.

I applaud the publisher for the audacity to market this book in a tough economy. Andreios, I think I will buy the book and envy what I cannot afford either. For some reason I am being called to Nepal and Iceland instead on a budget.

That is one good thing in living in central europe - one can get to many wonderful places in just one or two tank of petrol... Sleep in the boxy volvo and make images... But first I am going to put an order for that book.

A while back Thomas published a book called "New York Sleeps" which was shot in a similar style (if I remember correctly he used a Linhof and Polaroid film). IMO, really well done.

Thanks Don for the information. I wasn't aware of the NYC book by Thomas. Something else to search out and enjoy.

+1 on New York Sleeps. Moody and atmospheric.
