Grid lines are often just decals, and they can even wash off in ordinary soap and water. Surely the manufacturers must imagine that the glass will have to be cleaned at some point?
I've often just penciled grid lines or format composition marks on the groundglass.
Satin Snow used to have some useful groundglass overlays that you could print out on transparency film and just position on the shiny side of the glass. You might be able to find those archived somewhere on the net.
