    Smile Epson V700 and heat?

I was scanning a batch of negatives with my Epson V700 over the weekend and I ran into some issues. We had a couple of hot and humid days here in Northern Germany (it does not happen too often) and the scanner just switched off in the middle of a scan. It seemed like a heat-related issue: after switching off AND pulling the plug for a couple of minutes I could run another scan, but whenever I scanned two negatives in a row the scanner switched off again.

The next day temperatures dropped and the scanner went back to normal.

Anybody experienced the same with the Epson scanner?

    Greetings, Thomas

BTW, for U.S. forum users: no, we don't believe in airconditioning here

    Hi Thomas,

Most modern electronic equipment includes safety circuits to shut the machine off if it gets too hot, to prevent damage.

This can happen at moderate ambient temperature if the machine is used heavily, with a high duty cycle.

It sounds like that's what happened in your case. If the machine works fine at lower temperatures, I wouldn't worry about it.

I've never experienced this problem with my V750, but I can easily envision it happening under the right conditions.
Yes, mine is in an air conditioned office. With most days this month above 33°C and many above 38°C, I'm glad of it.

    Re: Epson V700 and heat?

Sounds like an unusual “come-and-go” problem. I use the earlier 4990 model, and while it gets warm on busy days, including days when the mercury climbs high, it has never repeatedly stalled like your V700.

Did you check the oil? And do you change it every 5,000 scans or so?

If it’s not the heat, one of my first suspicions would center on the cord that goes into the scanner’s lid (not the the main power connection, or the USB connection). In several threads, that oft-overlooked connection has caused a lot of unnecessary grief. Before each of my sessions, I make sure the cord is properly engaged. Otherwise, it gets a little loose w/ time, and the lid light will stop working.

Hope your scanner behaves better in the future, hot days & cold...
