    Small format printer recommendtions

Hey all, I'm looking to get a small printer to make 8x10's out of my digital files. Can anyone recommend me something fairly inexpensive that can print black and white pictures? I used to own the epson artisan 50 but my prints came out cyan/green tinted. I'd like to get a warm/neutral tone out of the prints.

I'll be watching the answers Noah. I would like one that will do 11" prints. I have been fighting with my Canon i9900 for several years now. My finger-tips constantly look like they have been soaking in a rainbow snow-cone from all the head cleanings, refillings, nozzle checks, refillings, over and over again. I spend so much more time trying to get the darn thing to work than I do actually making prints.
Like you, I just want a small-ish printer that will give me a good B&W print.
That’s the trouble with you Americans - you expect nothing bad ever to happen, when the rest of the world expect only bad to happen...and they are not disappointed.

I picked up an Epson 2880 for about $450, it sells for less now.
It's a very good printer, and if you can find one for $200 or under, it would be an amazing deal.
It can handle up to 13", but uses very little ink and is very consistent.
Sometimes I go 2-3 months without printing, and it works fine once I fire it up, no need for nozzle cleaning.

If you want no-color-caset b&w images, I'd ask the folks at inkjetmall.com (Cone's place) what they suggest. The one that works the easiest for them is probably what you want... Just my opinion...

I think this is common to all manufacturers, unfortunately the consumer end of things seems designed to leak cash on consumables. I bought a top of the consumer end Epson R1900. In total I spent over US$1,200 on that printer/ink (excluding paper) before it ended up in the rubbish bin, completely valueless. Every single image colour shifted over time, B&W shifted everywhere, the emulsion on the glossy papers swelled in the humidity over here and lost detail over a couple of weeks, so basically hours and hours of time, coloured fingers, plus all that money straight down the toilet with nothing to show. It's a false economy even if you intend to make only a few prints per year. Much better spending a bit more up front and getting the low end professional models like Epson 3880 or Canon IPF range (I went for the Canon and it's wonderful).

Had a look at their website and was interested in their B&W cartridges/ink. I've always been a little bit concerned about 3rd party ink. Do you have any experience with it? Any idea what the chance of damaging my printer is? I've got an Epson 3880.

    Cheers,

I've been using this ink since 2002. No damages as yet. My feeling is that its better than the manufacturer's ink, more archival and just as easy on the nozzles these days.

And don't let anyone tell you that it voids the warranty, either. There are laws agains that....

Unfortunately, as this thread has reminded us, there is NO high-quality small-format printer anymore since Epson discontinued the R800. I wish I had been paying attention at the time and got one.

R3000 versus R2880? Thoughts and comments?

The current $300 rebate on the 3880 makes it a bit tempting, though.
