um, how do I tell AN glass is AN glass?

I got a number of glass plates for a negative holder in, and some of them are supposed to be the AN glass for the top plate of the holder.

But they all look the same.

What does AN glass look like?

Is it supposed to have some micro-frosting on the surface, or something that doesn't look like polished glass?

    regards
    Vick

yes, it looks somewhat "matted" on the surface, almost like an ultra-fine sandblasted appearance.

Clean the glass before you look. Hazy fog on glass can look like an AN surface, it isn't.

Some AN glass is acid etched. You may be able to feel that etching with your fingernail.

AN glass looks slightly greasy. It will look fairly clear, but the most telling thing is to look at a reflection of something in the glass. You shouldn't be able to see any texture in it by feel or eye, it's much too fine for that.

    anti-newton-ring glass. Non-reflective.

I find it helpful to turn the glass so I can see the reflection of a light source like a lamp or a window. The AN side gives an unclear, fuzzy reflection, while the other side shows a very clear reflection.

I have had the same challenge. I found that if you hold the glass flat from you eye as if you are looking cross it's surface like a a desert landscape stretching away from you, one side will be more shiny than the other. The duller side is the AN side..I don't know if this makes any sense...Robbie
