Hey guys, I found this lens in an antique show nearby and I wonder if any member in the forum could share some info. I already checked the "Lens Vade Mecum" and it seems from the early 1880's. Thanks!

This is a big one, size 5!

This is a period of enormous development at Braunschweig and it could be either an early unmarked Euryskop series IV type with F6 or a slower type around F8 which seems to have become the later series VI. Or something else!

If the glass is OK this a very good find.
Measure the diameter of the front glass and the focal length (measure from the Waterhouse Stop) and we can say more. There are old catalogues around!

Good lens, now that you know they were called Euryscops (a little later, early ones not marked such), there is a LOT of info already on this board. Here are some threads to get your search started:

That third thread has some photos of my early 1880s euryscop (not marked as such). great find. It's one of my favorite lenses.

Thanks guys! The front (and rear group) is 3" in diameter. The focal distance to the waterstop slot is close to 18". The glass is mint and it came with 4 or 5 waterstops. Not sure if one of those old 8x10s kodak cameras is able to handle the weight of the lens.

    Congratulations!

The data for size 5 Eurykop Series IV is as follows.

F6, Focal length 17.5" front lens diameter is 3 1/8" and it was designed for format 14x17" - but it will cover more!

I only have size no. 2 which covers 8x10"

If you are stopping at 8x10", it would be most sensible to "exchange" this for smaller sizes. Needless to say, this one lens would become several smaller lenses of the same calibre! They were made up to size 9, 46" covering 40x50"!

Here a later No. 5 of mine. With almost complete lacquer and marked Euryscop.

    And an 8x10 it took:

That's lovely. The portrait, I mean.

I'll try to assemble some 8x10 test box tomorrow. I'm dying to look in a GG behind this glass.
