Usually f/22, but sometimes larger for the f/4 lenses.

I follow the manufacturer's recommendations when available, which they are for many of my lenses.

All of my lenses are modern, almost all f/5.6: Rodenstock Apo-Sironar-S (most FLs) plus Nikkor and Fujinon.

Depends on the lens and subject matter ... no particular favorite ... and, I have several lenses where there is only one choice: wide open.

    Re: Favorite aperture?

My default aperture is f/22 using modern lenses on a 4x5 camera. I don't think I have ever shot them at f/16 or wider. If I need more depth of field or motion blur I will go to f/32, or f/45 on an f/64 lens, but never to the smallest aperture.

For landscape - 22. I'd go 45 or 64 if I were shooting faster film.

    For portraiture - wide open.

I agree. This is essentially my approach, as well.

    Re: Favorite aperture?

It depends on what my priority is for a given subject---perhaps its DOF, perhaps its a fast shutter speed, perhaps a given example of a lens just seems to work better (my 240mm G Claron @ f/32 comes to mind)

    Hi John,

I think everyone follows that philosophy.

A "favorite" aperture does not constitute a law, only a starting point.
