Buying to collect is a far cry from buying to use. That crappy little 135 format camera... no thanks.

Hugo... I buy your cameras to use and am VERY happy to have my 45N-1.

Re buying new lenses, I'd love to. Send money.

Without a much larger budget, its used gear for me.

    Send money.

Re: Buy new or buy used?

I try to buy everything I can, used. I've purchased four LF cameras in my life: Cambo 45nx, Shen Hao 45, Chamoninx o45n, Watson & Son tailboard. All were bought used. Same for lenses. Of course with lenses, I'm mostly intersted in those made 1840--1860, and 1890--1929. I think LF will be around for quite awhile yet. People out here still use muzzle loading rifles and bows to hunt deer.

I've rarely ever bought new. Only when used or factory refurb isn't available.

99.99% of the time, I can't or won't afford new. I find that I can be the second owner, and down a bit on the depreciation curve, which suits me fine.

Perhaps the fault of my ways is that I don't directly support the manufacturer. I don't know how to personally solve that problem.

We're coming to an age where the choices will be to buy used, or build, commission. I'm hoping computer-aided manufacturing soon comes to a point where we can home-build replicas of historic lenses...

The USA has returned to late 19th and early 20th century economics. Only the relatively wealthy can afford to buy better things new (not just the best things). We can only afford second-hand mid-grade things... if we're lucky.

if you can afford to buy new,
and a dealer has what you want ...
i don't see any reason not to buy new ..
i have never had enough money to buy anything new
except for random stuff like steve grimes machine-work,
degroff bulb releases, and a tripod or 2 .. or when im feeling
    really rich, some film ...

I'm amazed at how some of the things we can buy used at quite reasonable prices are really the best things of their era, and in many cases, the new ones aren't any better. Apochromatic enlarging lenses and cameras like the Sinar P or Linhof Tech V were things one could dream about in their day. Their newest incarnations aren't that different from the older ones, though they have the advantage of not having been used before when purchased new. In many cases, there isn't any practical justification for purchasing a new item, in terms of how it will accomplish its task.

I am a large format bottom feeder.
    I am aware of that.
I'm not against buying new, but I rarely have the $$
to purchase "capitol" equipment and it doesn't bother me in the least.
Pros who bought digital stuff and sold their large format for pennies
on the dollar are the reason why I have my kit in the first place.

I do buy new film, new chemicals, new filters, and new cable releases. I've even bought
a new light meter, a new loupe, a new shutter, a new light box and a couple of new film holders.
I've yet to buy a new lens or a new camera. Ask me again when I win the lottery, willya?
