Negative carrier for the Omega 4x5 Universal Pro Lab enlarger.

    Hi Gang.

I am still gathering all my equipment to start developing 4x5. The negative carrier that I received with the Enlarger was still in the box and looks to be slightly used. I've noticed that the negative holder has one piece of glass and the box states that there is glass. My question to you, how important is the glass and should there be one or two pieces of glass because clearly the holder has hold down screws for top and bottom.
I've also noticed that there are glassless holders, which is better.
    Thanks.

You will get a lot of advice ,, my two cents is use the glass, you should have regular glass on the bottom holder and AN glass on the top.. also on the bottom glass on the back side you can use black
electrical tape to mask out smaller neg sizes.

You are in Toronto , if you are curious drop by Elevator and I will show you how we use the neg carriers. just call first..

    Hi Bob.
Thanks for replying to my post. Any idea where to find a glass for the bottom.
    Cheers.

I believe both the Omega D5500 style (which came on some Pro Lab enlargers) and the 'standard' Omega D carriers with glass need a piece of glass on both sides, otherwise there is no way to hold the negative in place.

I have measured the focus spread of a typical 4x5 negative in an Omega glassless carrier when making an 11x14 enlargement. Under those conditions even wide open (f 5.6) the whole thing is in focus. But you still can still have issues with temp changes and slight movement if you are not careful to warm everything up. I use glassless almost all the time under those conditions and get away with it.

Or alternately talk to Mike at Focal Point... www.fpointinc.com

His service is very good even for those of us North of the border, as I have both AN and regular glass from him for my negative carriers.

Good luck and welcome to the forum,

    Len
