    What does your pack weigh?

I'm wondering how much weight I might be able to save by getting a new pack. I have a LowePro photo trekker (I think). It weighs 6.5 lbs. It's a bit small for what I want to carry. I have 3 lenses currently and I'm adding another. A 5x7 camera and the usual stuff. I carry a tripod as well as the film holders in a MC photo case on the outside.

My F-Stop gear Tilopa BC weighs 5.5 lbs (with a large ICU) and carries waaaay better than a LowePro.

My Kondos Outdoors pack weights in at about 5-6lbs. The trouble is that when I get the 14x17 inside it makes it about 65-70 lbs. Makes for a great hike!

I'm using a nearly 10 year old Osprey pack for my 5x4 kit. Around 1.4 kilos IIRC. Takes all my kit (five lenses in two Gnass cases, 12 film holders in Gnass case, meter, camera, etc.) with room to spare, plus 3 liters of water, and I strap the tripod centered in the back (uses the loops meant for back country skis). Max weight is about 16 kilos.

The Osprey packs are super comfortable for me. Do an excellent job of keeping the weight on my hips, and as close to my spine as possible, so balance is excellent. I've done plenty of rock hopping with this setup, and some nice long day hikes (in the 25 km range) going up and down the mountains. I don't hesitate to recommend them, and if this one ever showed any signs of wear, I'd replace it with another Osprey, but it still looks almost new (if a little dusty).

That's a pretty darned personal question, isn't it?

    "pack", not "package"

8.6 lb (3.9 kg)..hooray for the Kata BP 502...but at least I can carry anything up to 8x10 with me... including lots of holders, lenses and everything... that is if I had more than 3 holders and more than one lens for outdoor hikes...

If a heavier pack fits you better, I’d consider that route.

Sure, pack weight is important, but how well the pack distributes its weight over your unique body on straps, belts, and pads is critical.

A better pack might weigh more than your current one, but feel lighter. Perception is everything.

It sounds like most packs are similar in weight and fit may be more important. How did you figure out the right pack? My pack has similar harness features to ones mentioned. Did you have a store where you could try out the pack with your stuff? I can get to B&H or Adorama in NYC but they don't have some of the packs mentioned.

Re: What does your pack weigh?

My f.64 BPX weighs 6.3 lbs according to the B&H specs. I expect that includes the two removable film holder pouches.

The pack weighs 25 pounds with a Zone VI 4x5, about 12 lenses, filters, and accessories, excluding the film pouches.
Each pouch with six holders weighs three pounds.

The pack is very comfortable, with wide shoulder straps and a lumbar pad. It rides quite nicely.

I chose this one because it's the largest one that f.64 makes, and it had the removable film pouches. That was important.
