Yes, pretty simple. I can convert a film holder to a wet plate holder in about an hour. I forgot to mention, the spots along the cut-out sides (circled in red in the photo) where you've drilled through leave a place where you can put your fingers in to lift out the plates. Very useful!

Yes, I imagined that was its purpose. The plane of focus must be a couple milimetres different since the glass sits where the film would right?

There are so many holders out there it is hard figuring out which are right. I guess you go by outer measure.
