    180mm Fujinon W doesn't fit modern Compur 1shutter

    hi,

some time ago I acquired an 180mm Fujinon, the single coated version with inscriptions on the front side of the lens.

It came in an electronically controlled copal shutter which I sold. The lens cells I put in a Compur 1 shutter, the last model from Compur. I used this lens for some pictures on a 5x7 and later a 4x5 camera. With the 4x5 I noticed, that images weren't as sharp as with my 125mm Fujinon. I also noticed, that the front cell just barely screwed into the shutter (maybe a quarter turn).

It seems like there is something stopping it from going in all the way into the shutter. Or the threading of the shutter is recessed to deeply.

Has anyone experienced this before? I always thought, that Copals and Compurs are built to the same dimensions.

    Greetings,
    pjotr

My database shows the 180mm Fujinon lenses in Copal #1 shutters.

The front and rear threads of the Copal #1 are different (40mmx0.75 front, 36mmx0.75 rear).

Check your Compur shutter. It sounds like it has different threads.

Definitely DO NOT force the cell into the shutter. Both assemblies are aluminum, which is not strong.
You risk stripping the threads from one or both parts.

Have you checked that there isn't a shim in the shutter from a previous set-up?

Earlier production may have been in Seiko #1 shutters; later they were shipped in Copal #1 shutters. I have one in its original Copal shutter, including factory LS 16 scales.

I've never checked Seiko/Copal/Compur #1 shutters for interchangeability, but did unsuccessfully attempt to replace the Seiko #0 shutter, in which a single-coated, 80-degree 135 mm Fujinon W was originally delivered, with a Copal #0. Although front and rear thread sizes matched, the rear cell screwed so far into the Copal #0 that it hit diaphragm blades. The Seiko #0 has a longer rear threaded opening onto which the cell seats before reaching blades in its intended shutter.

I do know that modern Copal and Compur #3 shutters are different too, rendering cells originally designed for one not directly usable in the other.

Moral of the story: even with the same threads, one might not be able to directly swap shutters. My advice: send it to Grimes.

    Sal,

Before they began EBC coating their lenses, most Fuji LF lenses were mounted in Seiko shutters.

However, the 180's are shown to be mounted in a Copal shutters.

When I realized that, I deleted my post.

Yes, all 3 of my 'inside letter' Fujinons are in Copals.
