    Tree Bark (& tree skin)

Have any favorite shots close enough for good texture or color?

Would love to see your tree bark or tree skin – on tall trunks, fallen logs, exposed roots, bushes, brambles, vines – alive, or bleached & decaying.

Plus things made out of bark – birch canoes, shoes, roofs, etc.

When I walk the mountain woods, I often see faces in the lines & shape of bark, both smiling and scowling. Douglas Fir is a favorite because its bark is so dark and deeply furrowed. Like an old man of the woods. On the other hand, I also love English Oak for the delicate, finely-graded, meandering ridges. Like fine wrinkles on a beautiful woman’s face.

Below is a shot of some peeling bark w/ orange skin underneath – a Madrona. The flaking bark is actually a sign of the tree’s health. They love the salty air & moist soil of my coastal region, and thrive here. Their sun-burned, weather-beaten appeal always calls to me, like there’s a sad, distressing story to tell.

Please show us what you found, or tell us a story...

Well, to be more specific, this is a photo of the cambium layer under the bark on a Douglas Fir. Bark beetles have laid their eggs and the larva have eaten their way out, leaving great looking patterns and a dead tree.

Real nice color and detail, Preston. Quite the color variety in that tree.

    Hey, down in front!

Actually, she found this to be a much easier pose than the previous one -- about 20+ feet up a fallen redwood (that was leaning at about a 45 degree angle).

This is actually two redwoods that have grown together -- the trunks separate about 10 feet above the top of the image.

    Scanned 5x7 carbon print.

Well, this isn't about the bark exactly, but I think the bark is pretty good. Not sure what type of tree it is.

Vaughn, we’re discussing tree skin – Sheesh.

A fun shot & it provides an unaccustomed scale to “bark.”

To be sure, all these shots have good bark. And bite.

Oh...tree skin! (How do I love thee skin? Let me count the ways...)

Vinny's image certainly bites (in a good way!)

Austin -- is that a bark anchored in the river? I don't know my ships...(and I do not see a third mast).
