    Contrast filter question

Are contrast filter that are between the light source and the lens better than those under the lens?

Not enough that you'd probably tell the difference.

If they're in good shape and kept that way, that's true. If the ones below the lens get scratched, then it can show in the image. We had that kind in my high school darkroom and I could tell which filter I used based on the scratch pattern. I seriously doubt users here would treat their filters as those were, however.

    Ill-defined question.

There is also a negative between the light source and the lens.

On which side of the negative do you propose to place the filter?

If you believe you can, or you believe you can't... you're right.

Hard to tell exactly what you're asking. Are you talking about cc filters for color printing or
something for VC papers? Generally speaking, filter sheet material put into a filter drawer
above the negative carrier does not need to be image quality, so something like acetate
or colored polyester would do. Below the lens you need the same quality of filter you would use on a taking lens - the best glass filters you can get in the respective color needed.
