    Re: April 2012 Portraits

This photo is much more a painting than a photo, it is out of time and has the potential to become an instant classic.

    Well let's go ahead...

Aurelie shot on ektar with my humble Linhof Color equiped with my telearton 240mm

I'm still unconfortable with photoshop and such so I will post another photo of this girl in May.
Large format photography is not only about size.

Wet Plate Collodion - Aluminum Whole plate, 15 second exposure, indoor window natural light. 13.5" Dallmeyer (Pre-patent) f3.5.

My son Aiden - 8 1/2 years old. Aiden sat (Patiently) for a quick plate yesterday for me. I made a bad choice and should have shot this on half-plate because I could not get any more adjustment out of my camera and tripod to fill the negative space (without my camera falling over, I need more room). I tried to clean up some scanner marks but wasn't entirely successful. I think the plate looks much better than the scan. Still learning...

I welcome any constructive criticism or comments as I desire to improve. Haven't done much in portraits.

nicely done three-foot. I don't mind the negative space at all, in fact I like some negative space especially used this way, shows that your son is right at that moment that he is about to grow into all that space. Your wet plate technique if excellent as well.

look forward to seeing more of your collodion work

    Thanks all!.
Tom, the black flag is a big Lastolite painted black. It keeps the spill from the background and walls off the dark part of her face.
    I use it a lot.

It works well Charlie...not a bad choice at all. When you mentioned about running put of adjustment... Was that bellows limitation if you went in closer?

Thanks, I had two limitations (other than my skills

I was at about maximum bellows extension ... I can't shoot 1:1 yet

With my wet plate camera I don't really have any movements like I would if I were using a LF. And I couldn't get camera low enough or my son high enough, so I had the front leg of the tripod out as much as I could without it sliding out from under on me pointing down at him as much as I could. The camera and wooden tripod are a new setup for me so I am still getting used to it. This was only my third plate since getting it. I am really enjoying having a dedicated wet plate camera though.
