    Angulon question

I just bought a Schneider 90mm f/6.8 Angulon (to use with Ben's upcoming camera) and there is a little screw -- shown in the box in the picture -- that is not flush and cannot be screwed further in. It prevents the retaining ring from making a flush contact with the back of the lens, so there is no way to mount this firmly to a board without a wobble. Anyone know what this screw is and how to resolve this issue?

    John

Thanks, it comes out and it seems to serve no function. What is the screw for?

It's a "set screw" for positioning on a lens board. We're actually building in a recess for the set screw... But I always remove them anyway because they interfere with my other lens boards, none of which have holes for set screws.

    Thanks, Ben! All mounted now.

After the sun gets pretty tonight, I am going up on my roof to shoot the Angulon on 8x10 (just to see the effect) and 4x5 as a test.

Ha! Should be interesting on 8x10! These older wides don't mechanically vignette, so even though the Angulon doesn't have much useful coverage, you should see an image circle bigger than 4x5.

Depending on the age of the lens, the image circle will be between 160mm and 200mm. Circle of illumination, for all ages of Angulon 90mm, will be around 220mm.

From my serial number, mine appears to be from ~1962.

Good late one then. Image circle is adequate for 4x5" at f:16 (although some would say F:32), and doesn't really increase after that . Old pre-WWII ones can be used with 5x7" at very small stops, as long as you're not too finicky about corner sharpness.

File a slot in the lens board and let the screw do its job, that is to stop the lens rotating when you screw everything together.
