Epson 7880 and Shiraz RIP... experience anyone?

I have access to an Epson 7880 at work, running Shiraz RIP... and, well, it hasn't really given me anything remotely close to color correct prints yet.

I have read some - but certainly not all in here - about the Epson 3880 and my 'workflow' has been this:
    - adjust image to my liking on my calibrated monitor
    - 'convert-to-profile' in PS, assigning the epson 7880 icc-profile to the picture
    - soft proof on screen
    - print via Shiraz RIP using a high-quality preset for the used paper...

I think (and it might be painfully obvious to the experienced among you) that I do something wrong in the RIP... please enlighten me

    ... thanks

I doubt this is your problem, but I would not perform the convert to profile step. Just softproof by creating custom softproof settings in PS that point to the exact same profile that is used in your RIP.

If the "epson 7880 icc-profile" is not the same profile as used in you RIP, you are not doing yourself any favors by converting to this profile.

thanks Greg, what you mention makes a lot of sense... but shouldn't I assign a profile to match the printer?

... anyone in here having experience with Shiraz RIP?

Nope. The RIP should reference a profile for the specific printer/ink/paper combination that you are using. That profile should render the optimal color fidelity of the file, regardless of what color space assigned to the input file.

    Bingo. You are double-profiling.
