Looking at a Saunders 4550 enlarger and I may buy it. I just wonder how I should take it apart. Should I remove both the lighthouse and the head?
Where can I find a online manual for it? Thx.

There are two screws at the top of the column which need to be removed, so the head will come off. If needed, the column can be removed from the baseboard. Easy to do...
Just be careful of the counter-spring. It can pack a strong wallop.
So I can remove the entire head off the column? How do I control the counter-spring?
Do I need to remove the lighthouse from the head?
Thx.
You have to remove the top column cover before doing any of this (and how to do that should be obvious). There is also a pin that clamps the spring bands to the column, which needs to be removed.
To control the counter-spring, you take the head off SLOWLY, and when you're at the top (not off the column yet), you can hook the spring onto the head unit, then go ahead and pull it off the top.
You don't need to remove the lighthouse from the head unless, perhaps, you are shipping the unit and you expect some rough handling.
See the manual, here, as the pictures make it pretty obvious what to do: http://manuelsphoto.free.fr/LPL7451.pdf
