    Depth of field

I came across these images and found the depth of field very interesting.
If you look at for instance the image of Eddie Grant (nr 2 from the top) the image feels quite condensed and sort of flat, like looking into a pair of binoculars, and the transition from sharp to completely blurry is quite quick. I thought I might achieve something like this with a 450mm lens on a 4x5 but didn't. Can anyone help me figure this out?

At what distance and aperture were you working? I can't be certain what format was used, but you will get that shallow DOF look with a long lens and wide aperture. Feel free to explore the homepage...http://www.largeformatphotography.info/

Can you post the picture that disappointed you? It would help us dissect it.
