Thread: My second semi-nudes..........

    My second semi-nudes..........

First of all thanks for all of the comments on my first post 2 weeks ago; it really helped!

The first round suffered from the clothing, seperation of Lori to background or lack of and me being too far away. I tried to address all of those issues this AM.

Overall I like them much more. The one with the back tilt was great in theory but I am not loving it.........it appears very akward to me.

The white wifebeater was a neat idea but it is a bit blown out. I did not think to expose for it.......

A total of 8 exposures were taken before the heat and mosquitos got to us.

All were taken wide open or very close to wide open with a 360 commecial lens. Deardorff 810, arista 400@200 16 min rodinal 1:50 in a Jobo.

I am not a portrait or nude photographer nor do I aspire to be one. I wanted to work on this specifically as I find it akward to do

The model is Lori my girlfriend and yes Johnelvis, I do sleep with her

    Thanks in advance

    David,
    Better foreground/background separation than before.
Two things to try next time:
    Move in closer
Eliminate large white areas, like clothing.
For portraits, I ask people only one thing: do not wear white unless it's under something else, i.e. a jacket, v-neck sweater, etc.
But this is head-and-shoulders above your last series.
    Good luck!

The fourth one suggests a stronger connection between model and graffitti which I like. Nice series. Keep at it.

The last three are pretty sweet, they show nice improvement. I think you're being too shy (the photographer, not the model) and ought to tighten up for a few, she has amazing ink to show off.

At what point will I lose the connection with the background when I am very close? I thought I was much closer

I like those last three. The tilt-focus thing in #2 needs a stronger reason or it's LF cliche. It could have been used to keep her whole body in focus in the first photo. Gotta try it sometimes to get a feel for it though, and you did.

I like the third one because the leaves are in it and add a nice element to the composition. Fourth and fifth are nice and like the third show good separation of the tattoos from the graffiti. I like the eye contact in the last one, but like the jeans being in focus in the fourth.

Nice improvement and thanks for sharing them!

Thanks...the tilt looked a lot better on the GG than on the negative

About your concerns about the whites... If this is just a negative scan, it could be your scanner settings and I'd bet some different scan setting and some curve adjustments might make things a little nicer. If it's indeed truthful to what you could print:

Another film choice could have made the whites come out nice. It's expensive, but TMY2 developed in a compensating developer (like PMK) will make for some nice highlight tones. The film can simply handle a longer range of lights and darks than the arista stuff.

Pyrocat-HD would also pump up the midtones to be a little more solid.

I don't use a Jobo, so I'm not sure what the best developer options are; that just my experience with tray or combiplan developing.

JP...good points. I have rolli pyro and ABC pyro but time keeps pushing me back to the jobo and rodinal. These are straight scans with a touch of contrast added in a few in LR3. I am sure they will all print OK if/when I get around to that.
