ABOUT THE SHOW

The striking images and exacting technique of 20th-century iconic photographer Ansel Adams have been well documented over the years through numerous exhibits, books and articles. What has not been shared in depth, until now, is the story of the man behind the camera—who he was as a person, how he worked, what motivated him to expose film to light, his magical and sometimes irreverent sense of humor.

In “Ansel Adams: In Focus,” long-time Adams assistant Alan Ross, an internationally recognized photographer in his own right, paints a picture of the legendary artist as only someone who worked side-by-side with him can. Using his own photographs of Adams working in the field and in the darkroom, personal notes and letters from master to apprentice, anecdotes and recollections from his nearly six years as Adams’ photographic assistant, Ross shares his experiences of the artist, mentor and friend.

On display will be several Ansel Adams original silver prints from Ross’s personal collection, including the rarely exhibited Portfolio VII. Ross will also share photographs and stories of the making of some of those images, as well as exhibit select images from his own impressive body of work, with an emphasis on those photographs made during his tenure with Adams. The connection between master and apprentice is clear, and Ross has obviously made the most of the legacy from an artist who shaped the realm of contemporary photographic art.

A selection of Adams and Ross images will be avaialable for purchase.
