    manipulations....

We are used to see so many images, that are perfect in exposure and printing...

Me however - I am a fool.... I must be a honoring member of the club for dust-grain and scratches....

So I made an effort to make an image "imperfect" and call it "Kill your Darlings"..

In short, I manipulate my negatives after the development - using everything from scissors to sandpaper, cigarette ashes and vhemical ways..

Sometimes I do this on the positive as well - usink liquid emulsion, the image can be easily manipulated after printing.

    Am I the only one?

I am curious to see if this will be a thread only for me....

    First go:

Negative cut/scratched/taped - printed with liquid emulsion and partially toned..

No you're NOT the only one and in fact we discussed this before on this forum: & ive been a fan of your dead darlings

SInce then I've been experimenting with cliche verre too.

It seems that most people limit themselves to "straight" photography - making an enlarged positive out of a negative, with only some manipulation of contrast, dodging and burning. But there is potential for so much more! No just distressed the negative; how about, no negative at all? How about putting bug wings on the negative carrier? How about enlarging drawings on acetate? Contact printing newspapers? etc etc.

Artist Maggie Foskett of Sanibel Island, Florida, composes assemblages of nimal parts the size of a large postage stamp on a glass plate,
which she puts in an enlarger. http://www.caldbeck.com/artist_info.html?artist_id=28

I have a number of "imperfect images" that are better than if they were perfect. Mostly from when I was doing Polaroid transfers. If I can find them I'll scan a few and join the club!

there you go... forgot about that thread, and being quite active in it, I feel embarrased.....

I tried to search, but didn't search for "distressed"....

Maybe I should just let this die quietly (like killing a darling...)

I'd agree and would enjoy another 'image sharing' thread...

    Re: manipulations....

    allright then...

This one, I distressed the negative with the #usual# stuff (scissor/tape and so on), but the main manipulation was made using bleach/re-development and fix on the background...

I used a small butterfly brush and then - after the bleach, I added the developer and fix randomly on the bleached areas - with out rinsing in between - interesting "fights" between the chemicals gave this image:

    Re: manipulations....

Its funny how we both have the same "stuff" - skulls, old dolls, stuffed birds, bare branches, and chicks. In fact I just bought a stuff crow from ebay. Old clocks can be spooky too. Right now I'm working on some nudes with large (dried) insects on them.
