Information required on Linhof Technika 4

    Hello from Karl

I still have not got my LF camera, I ended buying an Mamiya RZ, and still need a LF for architecture and scenics.

How different is the iv from the v and how useful is it for architectual photogr aphy. I am still looking for a 2nd Arca Disvovery or F- Basic. Does this forum know of websites where I can try get 2nd hand equipment, is there a subsection within this forum that deals with classified adds?

    Cheers Karl

I would select Arca-Swiss over Technicas for architectural photography, especially iv or v. (Not very wide-angle friendly, especially below 90mm.)

EBay frequently has Arca Swiss up on auction. Or, Midwest Photo Exchange, Photomark in Phoenix, Badger, or Quality Camera. For information from people who are Arca Swiss enthusiasts, call Photomark or Badger. If you go ebay, make sure that the seller has at least 100 feedback entries (personal opinion), and no negative feedback within the last 6 months.

The only difference between the Technika IV and V seems to be a geared lens rise on the IV. The Technika is not really optinal for architectual work IMHO.

If you check the LF page, you'll find a review of the Technika which mention differences between models and links to further information. I would not recommend the Technika (and most flat-bed cameras) for architectural work. This forum does not accept classifieds.

The V and later has more movement and 0 ground glasses if camming is important. The rise on a IV and earlier is behind the front standard so doing rise with short lenses may be more difficult then with the front mounted rise of the V and later. The IV and V are quite old. The V was discontinued a quarter century ago. It replaced the IV in the 60s. The IV replaced the III in the mid 50s.

Due to the age of the IV some repair/replacement parts unique to the IV are no longer available from Linhof or from service.

All repair parts for the V are still available.
