If you've only got a week I wouldn't go south of Sedona. I live in Tucson, its a great place to be "from" in Aug.
Go buy some film, and release the magic.

Anywhere between Flagstaff south to Prescott is my favorite area. You have to take the trip on 89a from Flagstaff south all the way to Prescott to see what I am talking about. BTW, take loads of film, especially when you get to Jerome. If you have a chance, take in the sunset from Desert View Tower at the south rim of GC. You might find yourself there during the monsoon, be forewarned and prep for it.

Phx may have cooled off to 105F by then. There are canyons where hypothermia is a risk even in August, but you'll get hyperthermic hiking to them. Stay north of the Rim if you plan any hiking.
