    Tibet now closed to foreigners

Just saw this in the Taipei Times:

China has closed Tibet to foreigners ahead of the 90th anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party on July 1, travel agents said yesterday.

“It’s a new rule because of the 90th anniversary celebration,” a travel agent at a major Western hotel in Tibet’s capital, Lhasa, said, requesting anonymity. “Even with a tour group, foreigners cannot come.”

Is it because of that Aussie journalist and the pizza joke? ;^)

At least it was Carl and not Kochie from the Australian Sunrise program. His jokes are even worse.

It should have been something like "Make me one with everything but leave out the Chinese mushrooms" ...

Just talked to a buddie who had a long-awaited photo trip cancelled. It's simply a matter of safety. Protests in both both Tibet and neighboring provinces are getting more heated, and this is predictable spark to a particularly nasty one.

The "foreigners" don't include the Chinese themselves, I suppose?

The Chinese might themselves be more regulated than outside visitors. That last thing
they want is some kind of incident happening or someone recording a heavy-handed
presence of the Chinese miliatary and this getting widely circulated by either Chinese or Tibetan dissidents. The Han Chinese and the Tibetans have been at war off and on for centuries, and it hasn't always been the Chinese who have been on top in overlapping districts. They don't forget their history every fifteen minutes like we do.
