Free web image hosting? - or - you get what you pay for

I just discovered that the free file hosting site that I use - fileave.com - is down. It has been down before, and when it was I would just get some kind of error window that would pop up...but now I am getting redirected to some search site window when I try to go the their site, and my pictures are not showing up in my ebay listings.
I don't know if this is temporary of if they have closed down shop and gone home.

I have lots of pictures and business pdf forms linked form there. If I have to start over, any suggestions on a web host free/cheep and reliable?

It sounds like dropbox would fit your needs. It's a great service, and free if you don't need much storage.

You can purchase website space and use it for a depository for $3.95 a month at http://www.lunarpages.com/web-hosting/. If you are serious about having a presence on the web via forums, or maybe a blog, or a portfolio, you should at some point become responsible for your image needs. Free sites are not really free through the insertion of cookies, advertising networks, and the possibility of site shutdowns with lost images. It is really nice not to burden free forums such as this one with bits of images collecting on their server as well, plus you have better control of your images when they are viewed from your depository.

    Just my 2 cents.

I guess it's time to man-up. I have been using the free service at fileave for a few years but am worried now that they have disappeared.
darr, where are you? I was born in Pensacola and my brother lives in Navarre.

Randy, I am currently in the Tallahassee area, but originally from Topanga, CA and Southern New Jersey. I have been to Pensacola a few times, but I do not think I have been in Navarre. It truly can be a small world.

    Kind regards,

Amazon S3 is a very cheap, reliable hosting service if that's what you're looking for. There are lots of S3 clients that work like ftp clients where you just drag and drop files.

They also have a new service where you can host static sites completely on S3 and direct your domain name there if you have one registered (such as with godaddy).

With S3 you about $1.50 per month to host a GB of data and you pay pennies for the downloads/uploads. It's cheaper if you go with their 99.99% reliable service (over their 99.9999999999999...% reliable service)

It's also a great service for hosting backups of your images if you're looking for reliable cloud storage. Just be sure you know which files have which viewing permissions. it's usually best to have public buckets and non-public buckets to prevent an accidental file permission error (user error, not system error).
