You should go to Samy's and make them replace your film, as I think it might be their fault.
Whatever problem you had wasn't caused by turning on the lights while the film was in the fix. Development is stopped almost instantaneously when the film hits the stop bath. The lights can be turned on at that point, you don't have to wait until the film is in the fix much less wait a certain length of time in the fix.

The originals were negatives. The fogging was caused by exposure to something while in the film holders, it didnt happen during processing. One possibility Samys mentioned was heat exposure. I forgot to mention that. As far as I know that didnt happen, but I cant be sure. Thanks for your suggestions.

I've had marking similar to that, but not as bad, when I've left film in holders for a few months. Albeit, I kept the holders in a light-tight holder bag in the back of the closet with my other photo gear, but after developing it, the markings were enough to thoroughly ruin the shots .

So, motto is: unload your film holders , whether used or not.

heat damage could also affect the film, however, it would probably be more of a "general fog" covering all the film's surface rather than just the edges.
