    Rodenstock 240mm Sironar on 4x5

Greetings. I recently acquired a Rodenstock Sironar 240mm f/5.6 in Copal 3 and have a problem. When attached to my Chamonix 045n-2 the aperture slider rubs the wood trim on the bottom of the front standard. It is in a cheap lensboard from Adorama. Is there a thicker lensboard I could buy or do I need to add something to my existing board to make this work? Thanks in advance.

Maybe try a washer to act as a spacer if you only need a mm or two?

The Copal #3 retaining ring and spacer are specifically designed to address this issue. Remove the nut, put the spacer in front of the lens board and put the nut back on (we just ahd a thread that talked about this in detail, with photos..try to search for it).

Could you rotate the shutter's orientation so that it clears?

It appears that I do not have a spacer, only the retaining ring.

Would a hardware store have a washer that I could substitute for a spacer?

I tried that but it bumps the frame no matter which direction I point the aperture. Down has the best motion although it still rubs a bit.

Thanks for this link. Based on what I have read it appears I am missing the front spacer. It was originally on a 8x10 board when I got it.

The correct hole diameter for a Copal #3 shutter is 64.2mm (2.528"). The flange ring diameter is 64.0mm (2.520").

Most likely you could use a 2 1/2" ID washer with no problems, since the IDs are usually a tad larger than nominal.

McMaster-Carr Supply at www.mcmaster.com has a 2 1/2" ID x 3 1/2" OD x 0.134" shim washer under catalog number 97063A550 at $9.47 for five pieces. Just type that number in the search box at upper left and click on Find.
You might need to enlarge its ID slightly, but it's worth a try.

On edit: I just ordered a package of these and will report my results.

You could also just order the correct Copal spacer from someone like S.K. Grimes...

I received the shims, and would be reluctant to recommend them.

The ID is too small to pass the retaining ring. They would work in the front, between the shutter and the lensboard, provided the board is thick enough that the retainer does not protrude.

These are steel, which means they could rust over time unless treated with a preservative.

If anybody wants one it's $3 cash including postage in CONUS. I have five.
