    Re: Paper negatives

before you'd posted Reinhold, I'd run one very old fiber paper thru my 8x10 (guessing at an iso 6) just for kicks. this is the paper "neg" hanging to dry right now. It was a 2sec. exposure pretty bright light outside -am I on the right track for what the neg looks like? It was a fun process so far. I look forward to trying to print a positive from it in a while. could become very addicting. Was going to be just contact printing my 8x10 negs anyway - could save some $ this way if I get a method down that works consistently for me... sorry for the phone shot of the paper- it is upside down too by the way.

    I agree.
    Nice density range.
Here's a quick peek at an unmanipulated positive (inverted in Photoshop)...

    Re: Paper negatives

    On your easel:
    Lay printing paper; emulsion "up"
on top of that; the negative, emulsion "down"
on top of that; a sheet of glass.

    Make some test strip exposures...

Set lens aperture to about f:8~11 (or so)
Lay a sheet of opaque paper over the glass, leaving about 2" exposed.
    Expose for about 5 seconds.
Move the paper to reveal an additional 2" (4" total width).
    Another 5 second exposure.
You now have have two areas, one @ 5 seconds, and one @ 10 seconds.
Repeat for two or three more exposures.
You'll have a series of strips of varying density in 5-second intervals.
Choose the best strip as your printing time.
If necessary, repeat using different aperture and/or times.
Dodging and burning is a bit imprecise, but it can be done...

    Caution...
    This could get addictive.
