How do you prepare a portfolio?

Sorry if the answer to this is right in front of my face, but I've been wondering about it for a while and couldn't get the answer from the archives.
I still present a printed portfolio to people.
When I am getting a new book together, I usually make a quick 5x7 of every photo I might use in my new book, and then spend a few days or weeks figuring out the order in which the photos will be presented.
I do this by taping the photos to the wall in the order I intend to show them, and play around putting one print next to another to see how well they go together. Some prints end up being alone, and sometimes I put three photos on a double-page spread. Sometimes I leave a blank page.
My question is this: is there a software program that can do this?
I've used InDesign, it's a great program, but very time-consuming for this application.
    Anything you might suggest?

And what's your method of preparing a book?

I use the slide sorter function of MS PowerPoint. It is a bit cumbersome placing an image on every page. There may a way to automate this step, but I haven't taken time to find out. After using the slide sorter, I do a slide show to check the full-sized image transitions. Works well for me.
