It maybe helpful to get technical with fashion shots. Three sources (euww). Getting some directional light out of gridded dish. A little ring-light mounted on the lens to get some darker edges and and umbrella for the background. 4x5 Ektachrome. Underexposed and pushed in E6.

Creamy skin tones and great texture on the grays.

In the spirit of giving, here's another from the same series as the photo in the OP.
Same technical information as well, but I burned in the sides of the photo to help her stand out better.

you just don't use the light. You make the light sing to whatever tune you want played... I'd be happy if I understood just 10% of the mastery you have...
