You have to remember it was the two leaders of each camp feuding, Ansel adams and William Mortensen... and not their copycat admirers. While they might not have liked each other's work, at least they acknowledged that they represent their respective camps at a high level.

    Re: Nude

The majority of photography is subject driven. The use of lens type is secondary to the theme. At the same time, most discussion seems to be about some technical aspect of shooting or the implied great body of one particular model or another. The really great photography manages to capture an essence of the person in front of their eyes. At the same time little words are spent on how the photographer got to know the subject and managed to shoot at that critical and essential moment.

Agreed. He marks the first time I've used FfVb on this board to totally block someone, and managed it in one post.

That is an interesting comment and I have to agree with it; it was high noon with the two top gunslingers around. I would also point out that what is being widely disseminated these days is not Pictorialism but an exploration of something entirely new. The Pictorialists by and large only had soft lens to work with. In any event these lenses tended to be useful for the type of photography they were interested in. Beyond the soft images, was the dependence on highly manipulative techniques to yield a more painterly style. In any event, I don’t think that any current soft focus lens practictioner would consider themselves a pictorialist. Rather, current soft focus practitioners are simply exploring the aesthetic effects of soft focus images. The current soft focus technique is to take advantage of the out of focus part of the image whereas the pictorialists were more interested in having the subject soft. The merits of what they do should not depend on the fact that the lenses they use are soft focus and produce swirls, however, the inclusion of the soft focus effects is part of the their interpretation….good or bad.

Are you sure it wasn't Mortensen, Adams, and a lot of people who identified with each of them? I'm no expert, but from what I've read, the conflict ranged far beyond the two notables.

For what it's worth, my comments have nothing to do with pictorialism or soft focus images, and I'm not advocating for an alternative, so the whole comparison is off base.

    Nathan,

It's a normally developed print (Dektol in my case) then bleached, and redeveloped in Lith developer. Good for papers that don't normally Lith well from the beginning.

(Guess I should have noted it was a print scan)

    Cheers,
    Dan

You could make that picture a lot sharper with some lens tilt.

That's how styles and approaches can work for the good, even with petzvals.

There must be somewhere a difference between "nude", "naked", and "seeing through"....
(nude women, naked woman, seeing through.. ?
I will make the remark concerning "nude", that many "metaphor" expressions through camera work joins the same kind of energy (libido) and obeys to instinctive modes (scope pulsions...)...
what is interesting for me is the way one frames it, the way it is offered to our potential "viewers" and to have a minimum degree of consciousness of what is being "awaked" in others...
