Epson V700 scanner

Will an Epson V700 scanner produce a good enough scan when scanning
35mm film to make a decent 4x6 or 5x7 print

Yep. I've printed 10x8" prints from 35mm scans made in a v700. I've also made 30x30" prints from 6x6cm negs scanned in that scanner. You might need to scan a high resolution and either sharpen or 2-up (where you scan twice as big as you're going to print) to get a crisp image.

According to filmscanner.info, the Epson V700 delivers around 2300 spi of useable data.

If you print at 300 dpi, that means you can enlarge by a factor of 2300/300 or roughly 7 X, and get good quality. Not quite an 8x10, but close. Certainly a nice 5x7.

Some photos look sharper than others of course, so as they say, "Your mileage may vary".

Make sure to consider an after-market film holder if you're internding to scan unmounted roll film.

The V700 roll film holders (35mm and 120/220) holders don't hold film flat either laterally or longitudinally due to curl.

Try placing the 35mm film on a light table and photographing it with a good DSLR, and maybe a macro lens

I've just ordered the Better Scanning glass holder for my v700. The supplied holders do not keep 35mm or 120 film flat enough, and you also need to finely adjust the height of the film for best results.

After reading some notes by Tim Parkin, I now always scan at 6400DPI and rescale the image as necessary after that. (see this flickr discussion/).
