AP news story on ditching digital for film

No this is not news to us in the large format game, but to see Yahoo and AP running a news story on the "comeback" of film as retro and an "better" alternative to "cold" digital is still kinda neat.

They even mention Lomo in the story which is cool in itself.

And before it starts a flame war, I do not think this ends or solves the great debate, but I did think it was a nice idea even if it is a simple story.

    Watch, if you dare...... :-)

At the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where I teach in the summers, students check out film camera like 3:1 even though high end DSLRs and MFD is available.
    Thanks,

I was down at Venice beach here in LA yesterday with friends, saw about 15 people(not together) shooting film. Albeit 35mm(except one woman with a Rolleiflex).

good to see it making a comeback(maybe just to be 'hip', but still good nonetheless)

Re: AP news story on ditching digital for film

Part of the reason I think people, especially a surprising number of young people, are getting interested in film is that digital camera companies have (so far) not yet offered a entry level learner camera.

Where is the digital Pentax K1000? People get a digital and then some subset want to do more with the camera, to get deeper into it. But that way is steeply uphill since all the controls are buried in menus.

Sometimes when I visit friends houses I bring my Polaroid Press camera (shoots 3 /12 x 4/12 pack film) and a box or two of whatever Fuji I have extra of. The kids snap it up and run outside together with it, dividing up the number of exposures among themselves as they go.

It's partly the physicality of film, especially instant film, but I think deeper down it is the urge to play and explore--it is difficult to do either in digital without spending a $1000.
