    DIY Darkroom filter ??

    Hi everyone,
So I have moved and am RE-Setting up my darkroom, again ... never move intro a girlfriend's house...

Anyway I bough 2 10x12 Kodak safelight fixtures for a fellow on the internet that need filters and B&H sells them for $80 and I refuse to shop eBay anymore.

So what do you guys know about safelight filtering?

I will be doing Ilford IV veri-contrast paper & X-Ray film so Red seems right, right?

    Thanks in Advance~
    Steve

I've posted the formulae for making up your own darkroom safe-light filters. I'll see if I can find them again.

Some came from Mees himself while working at Wratten & Wainright in the UK, (pre his joining Kodak).

If you can coat a Platinum/Palladium print then coating a safe-light filter is easy

Go down to Arizona Art Supply and see if they have any ruby or amber lithe available and tape too glass. That is where I got mine for my Thomas safelight, has been working great for years. I you need some glass let me know I always have scrap from my business around.

You can search the forum for postings on LED bulbs. I have one in red color that emits a very narrow portion of the visible spectrum. Photo paper is insensitive to it. These bulbs last a long time, and screw into a standard lightbulb socket.

I have two kodak 10x12 safelight filters I'd gladly sell. Number 1A and No.13. PM me if you are interested.

Ian, that sounds very interesting. It would be great if you could find those formulae.

I have two safelights. One is a standard fixture with a Lee or Rosco (can't remember which) cinema filter called Blood Red. The other is a red led about 6 inches in diameter. the first ones only cost a few bucks, and the second was about $30 if I remember correctly.

You can buy deep-red LEDs off ebay and make your own safelights. No filter is necessary if the red is "red" enough...

I did the rubylith thing with a pair of wall-mounted, adjustable lights and I'm happy with the results however I mostly use my Thomas light in OC so these get little use.

Check Freestyle, they have them, if I recall, for about $24, either red or OC.
