moderation?

Is it remotely possible to require new posters at least the first 3 or 5 posts be moderated? The spammers seem to be striking with regularity lately.

depends, how many new members a day? How many of their first 3 posts or so tend to be either spam, and they are never to be seen again, or normal people that join the conversation?

We have tried that in the past, but it doesn't work very well. New registrations are now checked against an external database of known spammers. That catches many of the spammer attempts, but they still sneak in through the cracks in the floor - rather like roaches.
