World Pinhole Photography Day or What I was going to submit.

I never read the WPPD rules, so I thought I could use an image that I had taken near the actual day. That is what happens when you don't check things out! I took these on a great weather day early last week. As it says, it is the US Customs House in Charleston, South Carolina.

I'm trying something today, inside, but the exposure is loooooooong! I'm not sure if it will work, but if it does, I will submit it.

Okay, first post here, and first pinhole camera, with test image:









I built the camera out of 1/2 and 3/4 inch birch plywood. The distance from the pinhole to the film plane is 3-15/32 inches. The pinhole was made from a coke can, with a #12 needle. That should have given me a hole of 0.015 inches, with an f-stop of f220.

This camera is wide! I was about four feet from the first statue in the image.

The film is Kodak Tri-X 320, and the exposure was about twenty seconds. I developed it on Kodak D76 for 7 minutes at 69 degrees. This was about 10% less than normal.

Overall, I was impressed that I got a usable image! I had visions of either a blank piece of film, or something that was totally black.

From the standpoint of image sharpness, I'm not impressed. I have seen better images here. I may need to invest in a lasor cut pinhole.

My day was pretty much rained out as well. Only now has it started to clear up. Too late to do anything outside. I am trying something inside. Really long exposure, so I don't know how it will turn out. But, I will probably not develop it today. I have until May 31st to submit it.

Did you wind up getting a laser cut hole? I'm only asking because you comment on the sharpness and the one thing that blows me away with images you posted above was the sharpness. I've always sort of dismissed pinhole because I'm a bit of a sharpness freak but seeing your results I'm willing to look at it again.

That first test image of the kid statues was not as sharp as I wanted it to be, so yes, I ordered a laser cut pinhole. Since then, I have been amazed at how sharp pinhole images can be!
