Step Falls Preserve, Newry Maine. July 2016.
4x5 speed graphic, FP4+ film in pyrocat hdc. 9" Gundlach Hyperion soft focus lens.

One of my personal rules made to be broken, I shy away from finely detailed subject with soft focus, instead going for shapes and tones as SF is not made for detail.
I lucked out on this with the pine needles rendering just right.
An eight of an inch adjustment on the aperture ring would make them too sharp or too mushy.

I think this would be a fascinating cyanotype, if you're into that.

On the basis of no experience I image the strong visual signatures of soft-focus and cyanotype could confound each other. But, hey, I don't do cyanotype and I've been wrong before. Somebody, please, post an example!

About 2/3 of my cyanotype photos are soft focus:

People like Arthur Wesley Dow and F H Day regularly did soft focus cyanotypes.

Thanks for that. There are some very sweet pictures there and they illustrate what seems to be "rule" for soft focus landscape: bright subjects in front dark backgrounds work much better than dark against light.
