    4990 Drivers for Snow Leopard

Oops - They don't have any. Looks like it's time to go back to VueScan.

I upgraded to Snow Leopard, after waiting 6 months. I appreciate the faster rendering of thumbnails and images in general - and thought that there were drivers available. Nope. Oh well...

    I guess I'll try Silverfast.

I just tried Silverfast in Demo Mode.

It locks up and fails all the time. Is that what others experience ?

I'm tempted to go back to the previous version of OS X.

    Doesn't it work under Rosetta?
You might have to install Rosetta from the install DVD-

All of these programs work for me in Snow Leopard-

    I had installed Rosetta already.

I tried the Epson drivers again, and this time... they worked !

Thanks Joseph, you saved me !

    Very good-

I was just about to reply that I'd got a bit ahead of myself- I use a v750-
but there were no new drivers, Epson or Silverfast, for Snow Leopard-

Re: 4990 Drivers for Snow Leopard

I don't know if this link will work externally, but Epson does have the OS X 10.6 drivers for 4990 listed on their website...

You need to go to "Get Drivers & Support" then "Scanners" and then follow the link chain. They have a special note about getting and installing 10.6 drivers there.

    Hope this helps,

    Marko

Thanks to jb7, I have already solved the problem. I just scanned this one with the Epson drivers, and removed the Silverfast demo.

    Thanks for your help !

Ken, last night I tried the Silverfast and the scans came up totally black with no image except the outline of the film holder. On my Epson 4990 the Epson drivers work.

    Thanks Curt -

I had the same experience. Some images came up black, others had a noise or garbage data on them, and mostly, the scanner froze or the software hung. Restarting the scanner and software did nothing.

I wonder how these guys can stay in business. Perhaps their interest, or their core competency, lies in other products.

Re: 4990 Drivers for Snow Leopard

I was doing some scanning this weekend for the first time in Snow Leopard. First I installed the drivers and then I could't find the Twain command in CS4. Then I did a quick google search and it turns out you now need to download this from adobe if you want it. They claim that there might be issues with scanning with TWAIN in CS4, however I had no issues with the V750.

I was also trying to hunt for my Silverfast software, which I could not locate this weekend. Maybe that was a good thing since it appears to not be working.

All in all upgrading to SN has not been hugely positive for me. I have all kinds of compatibility issues and at work too with my video post work on a mac pro. And it is flaky on my macbook pro. A lot of little things act stupid, nothing serious just annoying. My macbook is the one of the first intels, and it's not 64 bit so I wonder if that has something to do with it. I am tempted to go back to regular leopard. It was rock solid for me, and I am not seeing much of an advantage with Snow on my laptop.
