I've read you can use steel wool in a pipe.

not sure though how you'd go about getting the silver separated from the steel other than melting it off the steel wool.

Actually the iron goes into solution when the silver precipitates and the steel wool disintegrates over time. The remaining sludge will still contain some iron, but not the full amount of the steel wool.
This would be true for a regular acidic fixer. Not so sure what happens with alkaline ones.

The problem is then properly disposing of the sludge. This system does that for you; they pick it up and recycle it properly at the end of a year and then you get a new system.

this product is essentially a trickle tank. it is a sealed
cartridge of iron or another metal
and it transfers the iron for the silver.
you have to keep it wet and run something through
it all the time or it will get what are called canyons/channels
and then end up useless. the ones that are not made of iron
tend to canyon less. essentially it is the same as having a pipe filled
with iron / steel wool, except there is a way to refine it, instead of just
throwing it in the landfill or on waste collection day, having it incinerated.

220$ plus shipping, plus the disposal fee and then plus another lid / cartridge ...
it doesn't sound like a bargain to me.
it is less expensive to have a waste hauler remove 50 gallons of fix. for 150$...

I can guarantee you no one will haul away anything in Manhattan for just $150. Manhattan might as well be Mars; things just work differently here.

Your product that you showed in the earlier post and via PMs sounds like an interesting alternative.
