    Talking Gallery- is it possible?

I do not know about such things so this could an impractical or stupid suggestion. But would it not be nicer if we could have a Gallery page for posting pictures with sections for Portrait, Landscape still life etc with the ability to post comments under the relevant image, instead of the long long threads we get.
I have not a clue what that would require but I feel the experience for viewing pictures would be more pleasurable.

    me too, I think-
if it could be organized, it would be a great way to do things...
Lots of pictures on the same page.
I get the feeling that a lot of great pictures get lost in threads,
and this would be a good way to keep them together-

The bandwidth increase from having a gallery is substantial and is one of the reasons apug.org's gallery is for subscribers only.

When I link pictures, I do it from my web site. I'm unwilling to put images on Flickr and other free sites--too much work to do it and then have it evaporate for reasons utterly beyond my control.

Personally, I like it this way.

I get to see what people are up to in small doses, together with discussion triggered by the images that is often interesting. That can't happen if you replace threads with galleries.

If I'm interested in the person's work, I can check his or her personal profile to see if there is more that can be seen on some other site; or I can check their posting history to see if they have posted previous images.

My experience with sites like photo.net, rangefinderforum and apug.org that go the gallery route is that one is faced with a wall of photographs that are mostly not worth looking at, and so I have the choice between trying to find the needles in the haystack or not bothering. I don't bother. To the extent that I look at photographs on sites that have galleries, it is photographs that have been posted to threads.

I think that's where a photographer's own Websites and blog work very well. And of course, there is photo.net and similar Websites. I'm not sure I understand the "wall of images" view. Photo.net offers single image Web page display for all of the images, and it's simple to link to that.

    Re: Gallery- is it possible?

Some of the work in the picture threads is just exquisite, and beyond that it's fun to see what everyone's up to. So I'm glad we have them.

But the problem with threads full of pictures is that they take forever to load over my middling-speed DSL line. I could set up my profile to have fewer messages on a page, but then I'd be spending my time slogging through pages.

I'm not sure whether galleries are the least-bad solution; perhaps someone has a different idea that can work within the framework of the site software.

I love the picture threads, much better than having to go to hunt down pictures in a gallery. The DSL lines I'm using here are not really high speed, but the image threads still work fine.

I prefer the thread approach also. In addition from learning from the images themselves, I learn a good deal from the comments of the more experienced members viewing them. Which is to say just about everyone.
