I am not nearly as sold on the torturing yourself with technique to get art - you could do it the way many artists did - drink a lot and then you cannot focus the camera. In that case a traditional Gibson would be perfect:
1 1/2 oz gin
3/4 oz vermouth
2 cocktail onions
More to the point, unless you have a lot of time and money, do this in 4x5 instead of 8x10. It will make no difference in the final images, but you will be able to work on your craft a lot more easily and cheaply. You could do it with an old graphic and a cheap old lens - except that you probably want a decent shutter to get accurate exposures. Then you could shoot a lot more shots than with 8x10, and nothing beats practice in getting better at your craft. Of course if you do have lots of time and money, go to it with 8x10 and enjoy.
