    Re: post alternative techniques

Thanks, Thomas. I think I got too caught up with including that little bit of shrubbery on top of the top rock when I was photographing...I felt I had to include it for some reason. I still like it, but perhaps it belongs in a different image than I was actually trying to take. I have another negative that I moved a tad closer (and ever so slightly to the right) and only the the base of that little piece of shrubbery is included. Perhaps tomorrow I need to make some more carbon tissue and print that negative next week or so.

I should flatten the prints a little more before scanning them...I actually do have a solid black rebate all the way round on the prints.

Reminds me of reading in AA's biography where he recalls a time when Ed Weston asked him: _Do you think it looks better here or (shifting the print a mere millimeter) here?

Looks fine Vaughn. I tried cropping it with my finger (I'm typing on my tablet) and couldn't see an improvement.

While most folks worry primarily about the central part of the image, what happens around the edges has an equal or even greater weight in my images. The edges (and corners) define the center. Moving the camera a degree or two on the tripod can make a big difference.

Perhaps another way to look at it; the center of the image will bring people over to one's photo on the wall, but the edges will keep them there.

    Thank you, Jon and David!
I had a productive afternoon yesterday and did a couple more. Among them:

Tulips, study III. by andreios, on Flickr

Tulips, study II. by andreios, on Flickr

Both are from the same negative and received same exposure - the first one was developed in sodium citrate and toned in gold, the 2nd one is untoned, but developed in borax with added tartaric acid - in this developer the image appears to be more delicate, maybe a bit more gritty.. You don't get the "colours" as in sodium citrate - and it doesn't react so apparently when toning e.g. in gold or selenium.

    Excellent work andreios. Bravo!

Quick question or two: How did you manage to keep the borders so neat and straight without sensitizer encroachment? Did you use rubylith? Also, what paper are you using?

    Thanks,

    Thomas

    Thank you, Thomas.
The paper I used was Bergger Cot 320, I usually print on the side with more texture.
Yes, it was Rubylith on a OHP transparency (cheap laser-jet stuff from my office) above the negative.
After development I use citric acid clearing bath where the unexposed sensitizer clears very nicely - or it seems so - but when I tried toning in selenium the sensitized area became visible - though only faintly. And I do not know the reason for this. Any clue anyone?
