4x5 image on focussing screen

Finally, I took my first LF pic ! Used a Fuji quickload. Think I did it right ! Don't know how it turned out, still need to send for dev and printing.

I have a 4 x 5 Shen Hao.

I can see the image on the focussing screen which has various markings, The focussing screen is bigger in area than the negative size. Question is which are the markings that corresponds to what I will capture on the negative. None of the markings seems to correspond exactly to the negative size ! Use the one that best fits ?

It's unusual for a 5x4 camera to show more than the maximum film area.The useable size of a sheet of 5x4 is about 95 by 120 mm. I suggest you tape off the screen to this area, or mark it out with a black felt tip pen to avoid any future confusion.

I have the same problem with the 6x9 ground glass on my Arca. Why don't the lines correspond with the edge of the image? Maddening. I used mylar slide masking tape to define the edge (after shooting a roll to establish that the tiny little corner marks did, indeed, delineate the corners of 6x9 and 6x7). The tape was a big help for the 6x9 edge --- now composing is much easier. I used a Sharpie pen to create side edges for 6x7.

It's kind of a bummer to ruin that beautiful piece of equipment, but it had to be done.

The Sharpie lines assuming you made then on the back side (the smooth side that is closest to you when focusing) can be easily removed with nail polish remover.

My guess is that the alignment varies from RFH back brand to brand.

You might try taking a developed piece of film and mark off the area on the glass, cwenteringt it, then re-checking it with another neg done after making the markings.

I am interested because I would like to get a similar camera.
