    4990 bulb death?

It appears that the transparency lamp in the lid of my Epson 4990 has died... One minute it was working fine, the next minute it was out, and nothing I've tried since has helped to resurrect it.

Has anyone here ever had a similar experience? Any ideas on DIY repairs?

My queries to Epson have so far gone unanswered.

    Thanks for all replies. -J

I have had my transparency lid lamp seem to die on my 4870 a number of times. Reinstalling the scanner software has brought it back to life each time.

    Running Mac OS 10.5.6

This is very good to know. I have a 4990 and haven't had any trouble but your advice may someday save me from my second coronary.

I suppose you have already checked but is the cable from the lid securely attached to it's port in the body of the scanner?

When you figure out what is wrong I sure would like to know. I haven't had any problems yet, knock on Deardorff, but now that I know this is possible I expect it any day.

    Dan-

After unplugging-replugging stuff numerous times with no luck, I decided to apply a few "love taps" to it with an open hand... Behold, she lives!!!

Of course, as part of my attempts to fix it, I'd updated the Epson driver with its TWAIN crap, which then crashed Silverfast every time I'd launch it. After a few drinks I figured out TWAIN needs to be disabled in the CS4 plugins folder...

Once I managed to get that set, all seems to be well again.

    J,

Congratulations. Tough love saved the day. That is the same technique my dad used to use with our recalcitrant Motorola TV.
