Duane, yes, I am quite aware of the Colorado plateau---having hiked, jeeped & photoed in the Paria, Escalante, Arches, Dark Canyon, the Grand, Monument Valley, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef since the 1970's. No, I'm not a noted landscape photographer of that region, although I call myself a b/w Histographer of this western territory, utilizing 35 up to 4x5.

As I stated earlier, Mark Klett out of ASU, is closest to your definition. I also forgot to mention Howard Bond in my initial posting as he has done some limited work in this territory. I also might mention William Cliff & Michael A. Smith.

I agree Jody Forsters' landscape work is splendid. My son has several of his alpine works acquired from the Andrew Smith gallery. The quality of printing is about as good as anyone could achieve generally, with a full range of tonal values. I don't recall seeing images from the so called Colorado Plateau region though. I assume this would include the Cedar Breaks area Which might be one of his B&W IIRC.

Lets not forget Philip Hyde, (deceased Mar 30, 2006). Well known for Slickrock, Drylands, A Glen Canyon Portfolio, Navajo Wildlands, among others

I had the pleasure of rafting the San Juan with Philip and Ardis in 1997. Philip was well advanced in age, but a mountain goat when it came to climbing the many geological formations along the river. A fine gentleman as well. Regretably he lost his sight soon after this river trip.

And yes he did Black/White although he is most remembered for his color work

Michael Fatali has done some really good images of the region, although it's in color.

Me, grinning with envy. The thing I love about Phil Hyde's work in this region is that so much of it deviates from the vertical symmetrical near-far composition that practically every other landscape image published seems to mimic. When I first saw SLICKROCK, I didn't even like the pictures, their compositions made no sense. Who shoots in hard overhead light? Well, Phil Hyde did. And when it sunk in that landscape pictures don't have to be pretty to be beautiful, it was no great suprise for me to learn that he had started out in Black and White; when I look at his images, I feel as though he saw tonal relationships in color to be a reason to expose a sheet of film, instead of just inserting elements into a golden rectangle. I wish I could have met him.

    that's the one...
"And I guess I should mention that Fate-taly guy who lights fires under the UT state icon..." Kirk

Met him at a fellow photographers house in 1995 in Phoenix. What an arrogant h***e's **s. I asked him about his lighting of several locations including the subway -- he claimed natural light late in the day, long exposure, blah, blah. His trial and misdemeanor arraignment wasn't too many years afterwards... (dig a little for story if you don't know it already)
