Splendid and entertaining, Edwin –
On one level, I feel the scrimmage between nature and industrialism.
On another, I see an eye with a tear drop.
On yet another, I’m reminded of exploring culverts when a kid – glad you’re still doing it!
That's exactly what I was thinking. I even did one where I was sitting on a rock on the other side wearing a black shirt to look like a pupil. Unfortunately, I didn't like my posture much so I scrapped it.
There are some other interesting notes about this shot. When I was setting up I found a little bat crawling around on the ground. I figured I disturbed him so I carefully put him back up in a crack and he crawled right in. Didn't get rabies. And this is what I found just outside the culvert (see attachment).
Yeah, that's right hundreds of daddy-long-legs. I actually also shot this with the 4x5 which was really hard because it was in a cavity between some rocks and I had to get the camera and tripod wedged into another cavity a few feet back. This required me to get my upper body into the second cavity in an inverted and very uncomfortable position. Once in there I got to thinking about the environment that those spiders were aggregating in and I had one of those moments of clarity upon realizing my head was jammed into the exact same type of hole. So I rotate my neck to look over my shoulder and immediately saw hundreds of "spiders" scurrying out across every surface all around my head. I could feel my higher brain trying to convince my lower brain that they were harmless but it didn't really want to listen.
Well, I know French, but Italian is close enough to give this a try.
I hope Francesco or Giovanni will iron-out the wrinkles:
Francesco: A beautiful photo, and the tower’s detail is impressive. Was the photo taken at dawn?
Giovanni: This was a vacation day at the beach, took the photo at about 8:00 p.m. – the hour of blue [or maybe “the magic hour”].
