I have a G1298 basalt tripod. It is well made and very sturdy for the weight. Basalt is a tough composite type material that is just a tad heavier than carbon fiber, but a lot lighter than aluminum.

When Eric Biggerstaff and I tested the Giotto tripods for Eric's article in View Camera magazine, we both preferred Giotto's Basalt to the carbon or aluminum. It was excellent at damping vibrations. I'm sure the Gitzo would be comparable.
